Combined Ethanol and Radiofrequency Ablation Yields Higher Odds of ≥85% Volume Reduction at 12 Months in Cystic Thyroid Nodules

Journal of vascular and interventional radiology : JVIRyesterday

Combined ethanol ablation plus radiofrequency ablation (RFA) vs RFA alone was associated with a 4.17-fold increase in the odds of achieving ≥85% volume reduction at 12 months in predominantly cystic thyroid nodules (adjusted OR 4.17, 95% CI 1.61–11.70, P=.004).

  • 184 nodules in 176 patients were treated: 81 RFA alone, 103 combined ethanol ablation + RFA, in a retrospective single-center study.
  • At 12 months, 89.3% of combined-treatment nodules vs 70.4% of RFA-alone nodules achieved ≥85% volume reduction (P≤.006).
  • Adjusted odds ratio for ≥85% VRR at 12 months was 4.17 (95% CI 1.61–11.70, P=.004); weighted OR 2.56 (95% CI 1.11–5.90, P=.028).
