Rapid-resorbable gelatin microspheres protect non-tumorous liver during Y-90 radioembolization: phase II trial

European radiologyyesterday

In a 20-patient phase II trial, transient flow modulation with rapid-resorbable gelatin microspheres reduced yttrium-90 (Y-90) deposition in non-tumorous liver by a median 35.8% (IQR 20.2-66.7) and preserved function on MRI at 6 months (p<0.001).

  • Seven of 20 patients (35%) showed a ≥2-fold increase in tumor-to-non-tumorous liver uptake ratio on Y-90 PET/CT compared to pre-treatment SPECT/CT.
  • The hepatobiliary phase signal intensity ratio on EOB-MRI significantly increased from baseline median 1.03 to 1.29 at 6 months (p<0.001), indicating preserved function.
  • All patients who received subsequent intra-arterial treatments achieved complete arterial recanalization.
