Added Lipiodol to imipenem/cilastatin in genicular artery embolization shows no long-term benefit

Journal of vascular and interventional radiology : JVIR2d ago

In a 77-patient cohort with knee osteoarthritis, adding Lipiodol to imipenem/cilastatin genicular artery embolization did not improve long-term outcomes; early pain reduction at 1 month was greater (p=0.024). Both regimens were safe.

  • The early visual analog scale (VAS) advantage with added Lipiodol was significant at 1 month (agent-by-time interaction p=0.024) but not sustained at 3 or 6 months.
  • Fewer arteries were embolized in the Lipiodol group (median 2 vs 3, p=0.040).
  • No severe adverse events occurred; mild adverse events, including transient skin discoloration, were comparable between groups.
