Feasibility of a 7-DOF Robotic Prostate Biopsy System with 3-Point Volumetric Co-Registration

Journal of vascular and interventional radiology : JVIRyesterday

In 48 biopsy-naïve men, a robotic targeted prostate biopsy system showed similar cancer detection vs systematic biopsy (47.9% vs 43.8%, p=0.48) but significantly higher tumor core involvement (68.5% vs 31.4%, p<0.01). Two anterior cancers were detected only by targeted biopsy.

  • Robotic targeted biopsy cores had more than double the mean tumor involvement compared to systematic cores (68.5% vs. 31.4%, p<0.01).
  • Two of 23 cancer-positive patients (8.7%) had cancer detected exclusively by robotic targeted biopsy, both with anterior lesions.
  • The system uses a 3-point volumetric fusion algorithm to co-register MRI and TRUS, compensating for prostate deformation.
